Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has affirmed his commitment to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), declaring he is back "for good" and criticizing his former alliance partner, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), as "good for nothing". Kumar, who has served multiple terms as Chief Minister, made the statement during a rally in Muzaffarpur, signaling a firm stance on his current political alignment.
Kumar, the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) leader, has a history of shifting alliances, causing political waves in Bihar. He initially partnered with the BJP in the mid-1990s, a relationship that saw its share of ups and downs. This alliance continued until 2013 when Kumar parted ways with the BJP. Subsequently, he briefly aligned with Lalu Prasad's RJD before returning to the NDA fold in 2017. In 2022, Kumar once again switched sides, joining forces with the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan to take on the BJP. However, prior to the Lok Sabha elections last year, he made another U-turn and rejoined the NDA.
Addressing the frequent changes in his political partnerships, Kumar stated that his party had led him to different alliances in the past, but such shifts would not occur again. He credited the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his initial rise to the Chief Minister position. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Khelo India Youth Games, Kumar emphasized his unwavering stance, stating, "I am going to remain here always".
During a rally, Kumar launched a sharp attack on his long-time rival Lalu Prasad Yadav, accusing him of nepotism and failing to work for women during his tenure. He contrasted this with his government's efforts toward women's empowerment. Kumar also accused Prasad of prioritizing his own family, referencing the appointment of his wife, Rabri Devi, as Chief Minister when Prasad had to step down due to the fodder scam. "Some people only cared about their own wives or their own families, but we work for the benefit of all people," Kumar said.
Kumar also highlighted the improvements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare under his administration, as well as the improved law and order situation in Bihar. He lauded the central government's cooperation in these developments. He claimed that during his tenure, religious harmony has been maintained, and disputes between Hindus and Muslims have decreased.
The RJD has responded to Kumar's statements with criticism. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has questioned Kumar's fitness to lead, referencing a video of Kumar struggling at a rally. Yadav has also alleged that Kumar's party might have deliberately incapacitated him and has questioned his mental state.
In addition to the political back-and-forth, Kumar faced criticism for garlanding a woman BJP candidate, Rama Nishad, during a rally, which broke with traditional protocol. This incident led to further questioning of his behavior and health by Tejashwi Yadav.
Nitish Kumar is seeking a record fifth consecutive term in office. His renewed commitment to the NDA signals a crucial phase in Bihar's political landscape, particularly with the upcoming elections.
