A fire in a 13-story building in Mumbai resulted in 17 people suffering from suffocation. The incident occurred early Saturday morning in the Shanti Sagar Building, located in the Ramabai Colony of Pantnagar in Ghatkopar East.
The fire reportedly started at approximately 1:35 AM in the building's electric meter room on the ground floor. The blaze itself was contained to the wiring and installations in that specific area. However, the resulting smoke quickly spread throughout the entire seven-story structure, leading to a dangerous situation for the residents.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Mumbai Fire Brigade responded swiftly. Firefighters were able to rescue approximately 90 residents who were stranded on various floors of the building. The rescue operation was conducted using the building's staircase, and all residents were safely brought down before the fire was completely extinguished around 2:05 AM.
Unfortunately, thirteen people suffered from suffocation due to smoke inhalation. Twelve of those affected were admitted to a local hospital for treatment, while one individual was treated at the OPD section and discharged. According to officials, nine of the injured were women.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire. While the fire was contained to the electrical room, the rapid spread of smoke highlights the importance of proper fire safety measures in residential buildings.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out on the 13th floor of the Vertex Solitaire Building in the Kalyan Aadharwadi area of Mumbai on November 26, 2024. The cause of this fire is still under investigation, and fire brigade personnel are working to extinguish the blaze. There have been no reports of casualties in this more recent fire.
