Mumbai: In a shocking incident that unfolded in broad daylight on Friday, 24-year-old Sonu Barai fatally stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Manisha Yadav, 24, on a busy street in the Kalachowkie area of central Mumbai before taking his own life. The incident occurred around 11 a.m., nearly two weeks after the couple had ended their relationship.
According to police reports, Barai suspected Yadav of seeing someone else, which led to frequent arguments and ultimately the breakup. On Friday morning, Barai contacted Yadav and arranged to meet her, allegedly with a kitchen knife concealed on his person.
Upon Yadav's arrival, Barai attacked her, stabbing her multiple times. As she attempted to escape, Yadav ran into a nearby nursing home, Aastha Maternity and Surgical Nursing Home, seeking refuge. However, Barai pursued her, continuing the assault inside the medical facility.
Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media depict the horrifying scene as Barai continued to slash at Yadav even as people nearby tried to intervene. Despite their efforts, they were unable to stop Barai due to his agitated state and the weapon he wielded.
Amidst the chaos, someone threw a stone and struck Barai with a wooden stick. Realizing he could not escape, Barai then slit his own throat. He died on the spot due to excessive blood loss.
A traffic police constable, Kiran Suryavanshi, who was nearby, was alerted to the incident by a passerby. Suryavanshi rushed inside the nursing home and transported the severely injured Yadav to Dr. Ambedkar Hospital in Byculla. She was later transferred to the government-run J.J. Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Barai's body was taken to the civic-run KEM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The bodies will be handed over to their families after post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have registered a case at the Kalachowki police station and have launched a thorough investigation into the matter. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the safety of women and the potential for violence in relationships.
