IPL Trade News: Jadeja Stays Put at CSK as Rajasthan Royals Grapple with Overseas Slot Dilemma
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Ravindra Jadeja is not leaving the franchise, at least for now. A high-profile trade involving Jadeja and Sanju Samson of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) has encountered a significant hurdle. The snag in the deal revolves around the Rajasthan Royals' overseas player quota and budget limitations, rather than any reluctance from Jadeja or Samson.
According to reports, discussions between CSK and RR for a swap deal involving Jadeja and Samson began almost two days ago. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to receive a formal request for approval, indicating that the trade is still in progress.
The primary complication arises from the inclusion of English all-rounder Sam Curran in the proposed deal. While the exchange of Jadeja and Samson, both Indian players, is a straightforward matter, Curran's involvement has thrown a wrench into the works. Rajasthan Royals already have eight overseas players in their squad: Jofra Archer, Shimron Hetmyer, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kwena Maphaka, Nandre Burger, and Lhuan-dre Pretorius. IPL rules restrict teams from having more than eight foreign players, meaning RR cannot add Curran unless they release one of their current overseas contingent.
Adding to the complexity, the Royals are also facing financial constraints. They have a mere INR 30 lakh remaining in their player purse, while Curran's auction value is INR 2.4 crore. Therefore, even if RR were to release an overseas player to create a slot, they would still need to free up sufficient funds to acquire Curran.
To overcome these obstacles, the Rajasthan Royals may consider releasing one or more of their overseas players with high price tags. Reports suggest that the franchise might be contemplating parting ways with their Sri Lankan spinners, Wanindu Hasaranga (INR 5.25 crore) and Maheesh Theekshana (INR 4.40 crore). Releasing either of them would not only create an overseas slot but also free up the necessary funds to accommodate Curran.
However, any such decisions are likely to be finalized after the November 15 retention deadline, when all IPL teams officially announce their lists of retained and released players. It remains to be seen whether RR will make the necessary adjustments to push the Jadeja-Samson-Curran trade through.
Despite the hurdles, sources close to the negotiation suggest that the trade is unlikely to collapse. The report further stated that it is hard to imagine either franchise backing out now, given how far discussions have progressed. For now, Ravindra Jadeja remains a CSK player, and the onus is on the RR management to decide how serious they are about acquiring the all-rounder.
