Wife of Ex-Nepal PM Khanal, Severely Burned in Protests, Receives Medical Treatment in India

Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Nepalese Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, has been transferred to New Delhi for advanced medical treatment following severe burn injuries. She sustained these injuries during the 'Gen Z' protests in Nepal on September 9, 2025.

During the protests, a mob set fire to Khanal's Kathmandu residence. Chitrakar suffered 15 per cent burns and lung damage due to smoke inhalation. Initial reports suggested that Chitrakar had died, but these were later proven to be incorrect. She was initially rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital in critical condition. Her condition was reported to be improving while at Kirtipur Burn Hospital. However, due to the severity of her injuries, she was flown to India for further treatment.

The protests, reportedly led by Gen-Z, have been ongoing in Nepal despite the government lifting a ban on social media platforms. Demonstrators are demanding the ouster of Prime Minister Oli and the dismissal of the government. The violent protests have resulted in attacks on major government and political landmarks across Nepal, including Singh Durbar, the central administrative complex, and Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence. Residences of the President, Prime Minister, and former prime ministers have also been targeted.

Amid the escalating unrest, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned. According to army sources, Oli had sought military assistance to control the situation and ensure his safe exit from the Prime Minister's residence. The Army Chief advised him to step down, suggesting that military intervention would only be possible if he relinquished power.
