Indian Army Set to Boost Anti-Tank Capabilities with Nag Mark 2 Missiles
In a significant move towards bolstering its indigenous defense capabilities, the Indian Army is preparing to induct 2,408 Nag Mark 2 anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) along with 107 NAMICA (Nag Missile Carrier) tracked vehicles. This acquisition marks a major success for the country's efforts to achieve self-reliance in military hardware. The Defence Ministry is expected to approve the Army's proposal during the Defence Acquisition Council meeting on October 23.
The Nag Mark 2 is an advanced, third-generation fire-and-forget ATGM system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). This missile is designed to detect, track, and destroy modern armored vehicles, including those equipped with explosive reactive armor (ERA). The Nag missile system has been under development since the 1990s as part of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). Approximately ₹3,500 crore (or $500 million) has been invested in the research, development, and manufacturing of the Nag missile.
Key Features and Capabilities
The Nag Mark 2 boasts several advanced features that make it a potent weapon system:
- Fire-and-Forget Technology: This allows the missile to lock onto its target before launch and then independently track and destroy it without further intervention from the operator.
- All-Weather Capability: The missile can operate effectively in all weather conditions and complex battlefield environments.
- Precision Strike Capability: The Nag Mark 2 is designed for pinpoint accuracy, ensuring a high probability of hitting its target.
- Tandem HEAT Warhead: The missile is equipped with a tandem-charge high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat modern tanks with ERA.
- Top Attack Capability: The missile can target the vulnerable upper surface of armored vehicles.
- Enhanced Range: The Nag Mk 2 has an enhanced operational range of 7 to 10 kilometers, an upgrade from the 4-kilometer range of the earlier Nag Mk 1 variant.
- Jet Vane Control System: The missile incorporates a jet vane control (JVC) system, enhancing its maneuverability and precision.
- High Speed: The missile can reach a speed of 230 meters per second and destroy targets up to 4 kilometers away in 17-18 seconds.
NAMICA: The Nag Missile Carrier
The Nag missiles will be launched from the Nag Missile Carrier (NAMICA), specifically the NAMICA Mk-2. The NAMICA is a modified BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) produced under license in India. It is equipped with electro-optical systems, including a thermal imager and a laser rangefinder, for target acquisition. The NAMICA Mk-2 retains the 30mm autocannon turret and is fitted with two twin Nag ATGM launchers on the sides of the turret. It can fire all six missiles within 20 seconds in quick firing mode.
Significance of the Acquisition
The induction of the Nag Mark 2 ATGM system is a significant step towards modernizing the Indian Army's anti-tank warfare capabilities. The missile system has completed field evaluation trials, validating its firing range and accuracy. The successful development and induction of the Nag Mark 2 also demonstrates India's growing self-reliance in defense technology.
The acquisition aligns with the Indian government's push for indigenous weapon systems. This initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on foreign arms suppliers and promoting the "Make in India" initiative.
