The leaders' recent conversation, disclosed by Trump during a Diwali celebration at the White House, underscores the commitment to strengthening the economic partnership between the two nations. Modi reciprocated the sentiment, expressing hope for continued collaboration between the two democracies.
Reports suggest that a potential agreement could involve the U.S. reducing tariffs on Indian exports from approximately 50% to around 15-16%. In return, India may commit to gradually decreasing its reliance on Russian crude oil imports. This proposal aligns with Washington's objective of tightening sanctions on Moscow and deepening its strategic partnership with New Delhi.
