Australian Cricketers Reportedly Molested in India, Accused Arrested
Indore, India – Two Australian women cricketers participating in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, have reported being inappropriately touched while walking to a cafe. The incident occurred on Thursday morning near Khajrana Road.
According to reports, a man on a motorcycle stalked the cricketers and then inappropriately touched one of them before fleeing. Following the incident, the players reported the matter to their team security officer, Danny Simmons, who then coordinated with local security liaison officers to provide assistance.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Himani Mishra met with the players to record their statements. Subsequently, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the MIG police station under sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, addressing the use of criminal force to outrage a woman's modesty and stalking.
The suspect was identified as Akil Khan after a bystander noted his motorcycle number. Police arrested Khan the following day. Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi stated that "Khan has prior criminal cases registered against him, and an investigation is ongoing".
The incident has prompted increased security measures for the remainder of the Women's Cricket World Cup tournament. Authorities have assured the Australian team and other participating nations that the safety and security of all athletes are of paramount importance.
This is not the first time that interactions between Australian athletes and Indian fans have resulted in negative outcomes. In December 2024, Team India canceled open practice sessions during their tour of Australia after players faced heckling and body-shaming from the crowd. In another instance, Australian bowler Xavier Bartlett faced abuse on social media after dismissing Virat Kohli in a recent ODI match.
The Australian High Commission has been notified and is providing consular assistance to the players. Cricket Australia has also released a statement, expressing their concern and offering full support to the team members involved. They are working closely with the ICC and local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of their players.
