Jammu, October 25, 2025 – A police constable is in critical condition after his service rifle discharged accidentally in the Jammu railway station area early Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 8:30 am, according to officials.
Selection Grade Constable Showkat Ahmad was on duty at the Jammu railway station when his rifle went off, striking him in the abdomen. Fellow officers immediately rushed him to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital for treatment.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding the circumstances of the accidental discharge. An investigation is underway to determine how the incident occurred. Preliminary reports suggest the constable was not cleaning the weapon at the time, contrary to a similar incident earlier this month involving a different officer.
This is the second reported incident in Jammu this month involving the accidental firing of a service weapon by a police officer. On October 13, Head Constable Sanjeev Kumar sustained injuries when his rifle discharged while he was cleaning it at Gulshan ground. Kumar was also taken to GMC hospital and was later reported to be in stable condition.
The incident has raised concerns about weapon handling procedures among law enforcement personnel in the region. Questions are being raised about safety protocols and the frequency of training exercises related to weapon maintenance and handling.
The condition of Showkat Ahmad remains critical, and medical professionals are working to stabilize him. Police officials have expressed their concern and are providing support to the injured constable's family. Further updates on his condition will be released as they become available.
