143 BLOs Face Suspension in Bengal for Skipping Duty: EC
The Election Commission (EC) has issued a stern warning to Block Level Officers (BLOs) in West Bengal, stating that those who fail to report for duty by Thursday will face severe administrative consequences, including suspension and departmental action. This directive comes as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls commences across the state.
According to an official from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the BLOs play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of electoral rolls at the grassroots level. The official emphasized that the entire SIR process would be jeopardized if BLOs do not take their responsibilities seriously.
Sources within the CEO's office indicate that approximately 143 BLOs across West Bengal are likely to be suspended for neglecting their duties. Despite being appointed in April, many of these officers have not assumed their responsibilities or attended mandatory training sessions. Show-cause notices were issued, but these 143 officials have still not joined their posts. The Block Level Officers facing potential suspension are from Murshidabad, Coochbehar, and Kolkata (North). These officers are primarily school teachers.
Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal chaired a video conference with all District Election Officers (DEOs) on Wednesday, reviewing the progress of training and field operations.
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has commenced, with house-to-house voter enumeration set to begin on November 4. As part of the revision, new voters who will turn 18 by January 1, 2026, will receive Form-6, and voters can download forms online. The EC's strict action underscores the importance of ensuring accurate and updated electoral rolls for the upcoming elections.
