In a move to streamline highway travel, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the "Know Your Vehicle" (KYV) process for FASTag users. The revised guidelines aim to enhance convenience, improve customer experience, and strengthen the FASTag ecosystem.
The KYV process was initially implemented to prevent misuse of FASTags, such as truck drivers using car tags to pay lower toll charges. It mandates FASTag users to submit their Registration Certificate (RC) and vehicle image to ensure the FASTag is affixed to the correct vehicle. The process was to be repeated every three years. However, the initial implementation faced challenges, with users finding it difficult to upload multiple photos and documents on user-unfriendly websites. Some users also reported being harassed at toll gates after their FASTags were suddenly frozen for non-compliance.
Under the simplified KYV guidelines, the requirement to upload side photographs of cars, jeeps, or vans has been removed. Now, users only need to upload a front picture showing the vehicle's number plate and the FASTag affixed on the windshield. Additionally, provisions have been made to automatically fetch RC details from the government's VAHAN database when the user enters the Vehicle Number, Chassis Number, or Mobile Number. If multiple vehicles are registered against a single mobile number, the user can select the vehicle for which they wish to complete KYV.
FASTags issued before the implementation of the KYV policy will remain active unless complaints are received regarding loose tags or misuse. Issuer banks will also send SMS reminders to users to complete the KYV process. If a user faces difficulty in uploading documents, the issuing bank is responsible for contacting the customer and assisting in completing the KYV process before disconnection. Customers can also contact the National Highway Helpline at 1033 for KYV-related issues.
The simplification of KYV rules is part of NHAI's initiative to strengthen the FASTag ecosystem as it prepares to implement a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system, a barrier-less tolling system, at key sections of National Highways. The aim is to have all national highways with four or more lanes under MLFF tolling in the next 4-5 years. Ensuring that a FASTag is assigned to and affixed on the correct category of vehicle, and that it remains active, is crucial for the MLFF system.
The KYV process supports the "One Vehicle One FASTag" rule, preventing fraud and misuse and ensuring smooth toll travel. Without a verified KYV, FASTags may be blocked or flagged, causing delays and extra costs. The revised guidelines and simplified process are expected to enhance user convenience and provide a seamless and efficient toll experience for highway users across India.
While the KYV process is mandatory for all FASTag users, the NHAI has clarified that FASTag services will not be immediately discontinued for non-compliant vehicles. Users will be given sufficient time to complete the KYV process. This move aims to avoid inconvenience to commuters while ensuring compliance with the KYV norms.
