India has rapidly emerged as a critical market for OpenAI, securing its position as the company's second-largest user base globally. Srinivas Narayanan, Global Chief Technology Officer, B2B Applications at OpenAI, revealed that India is not only the second largest in terms of users, but also the fastest-growing. Furthermore, India ranks among the top five countries concerning developer usage of OpenAI's tools and APIs.
This surge in adoption has spurred OpenAI to actively develop products tailored for the Indian market, with the intention of scaling these solutions for global application. Narayanan, an IIT Madras alumnus, has expressed his belief that India, with its robust tech ecosystem and enthusiastic developer community, is poised to become a leader in AI adoption.
OpenAI's commitment to India extends beyond user acquisition. The company is investing in building localized infrastructure, including data residency for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and API Platform, as well as enhanced language capabilities for Hindi and Tamil. This strategic pivot signifies a long-term commitment to India as a key revenue driver in Asia and a hub for AI innovation. To further expand its reach within India, OpenAI is providing ChatGPT Go free for 12 months to users in India starting November 4, 2025. This offer is available to both new and existing users.
Narayanan emphasized the importance of OpenAI's mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity, stating that the company is building technologies like ChatGPT that can impact education, healthcare, finance, and more.
OpenAI has begun hiring engineers in India to deepen its presence, especially in the enterprise segment. Speaking at a media roundtable in Bengaluru, Srinivas Narayanan and Pragya Misra, Head of Strategy and Global Affairs for India, said that India has become its largest market outside the US by user base.
OpenAI is also focused on making its models more contextually aware and responsive. A significant area of focus is multi-modality, which involves teaching models to understand and integrate diverse forms of input, such as audio and visual data. Personalization is also emerging as a key area of development.
Narayanan has witnessed the transformative power of AI, having spent over a decade at Meta. He recognized the potential of AI to impact products at scale and its potential for large-scale impact on the world. This realization led him to OpenAI and its mission to ensure that AGI benefits everyone.
