"A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance," Mamdani quoted from Nehru's iconic "Tryst with Destiny" speech, delivered on August 14, 1947. He emphasized that New York City had "stepped from the old to the new," signaling a departure from the established political order.
Mamdani's victory speech, delivered at the Brooklyn Paramount, was met with deafening cheers and chants of "Zohran, Zohran!". He thanked his supporters and the over 100,000 volunteers who propelled his campaign, promising to fight for all New Yorkers and make the city more affordable. "Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it," he declared. "The future is in our hands".
Mamdani, the first Muslim, South Asian, and African-born individual to lead New York City, defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent.
