The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth ₹11.14 crore belonging to former cricketers Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan in connection with a money laundering case linked to the online betting platform 1xBet. The ED issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The attached assets include mutual fund investments of Raina worth ₹6.64 crore and an immovable property (commercial land in Delhi) of Dhawan worth ₹4.5 crore. The agency considers these assets as proceeds of crime derived from illegal betting activities.
The ED's investigation revealed that Raina and Dhawan allegedly entered into endorsement agreements with foreign entities to promote 1xBet and its surrogate brands. The agency alleges that these endorsements were made in exchange for payments routed through foreign entities to conceal the illicit origin of the funds, which are linked to proceeds of crime generated from illegal betting activities. 1xBet allegedly operates in India without permission, utilizing surrogate branding, social media campaigns, and online advertisements. The payments for endorsements were allegedly routed through multiple layers of foreign intermediaries to conceal their illicit source.
Besides Raina and Dhawan, the ED has also questioned other cricketers like Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa, as well as actors Sonu Sood, Urvashi Rautela, Mimi Chakraborty, and Ankush Hazra, as part of the same investigation. The ED has detected 6,000 mule bank accounts used to transact illicit money, searched four payment gateways used to route betting funds, and identified 60 bank accounts linked to these platforms holding deposits of more than ₹4 crore.
Both Raina and Dhawan have the option to appeal against the ED's attachment order before the Adjudicating Authority of the PMLA and other legal forums. There have been no immediate comments from either of the former cricketers. Dhawan retired from all forms of cricket in August 2025, while Raina retired in 2020.
