India possesses substantial untapped potential for boosting productivity through Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a relatively lower risk of job displacement compared to other nations, according to a top government official. S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has emphasized that Indian businesses are increasingly prioritizing AI for practical enterprise applications rather than entertainment.
Krishnan highlighted that AI should be viewed as an opportunity to enhance productivity across key sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and agriculture. While AI may change how work is done, it will also generate new roles requiring new skills, ultimately contributing to job creation and economic growth. MeitY is working to ensure AI development in India remains people-centric, responsible, and scalable, with AI solutions designed to address real-world challenges and extend benefits to every citizen.
The government is actively shaping a future where AI and employment can coexist through investments in digital infrastructure, upskilling initiatives, and the development of locally relevant AI solutions. The goal is for India to become a global leader in responsible AI deployment, protecting jobs while paving the way for a technologically advanced and resilient economy.
Krishnan also stressed the importance of training Indian youth in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. He noted the need to build strong AI foundation models that reflect India's unique needs, including support for local languages and solutions tailored to regional and sector-specific challenges. This approach aligns with MeitY's broader vision of ensuring AI in India is inclusive, sustainable, and empowers the nation's diverse population.
Moreover, Krishnan spoke about the importance of developing an AI policy in India that balances innovation with ethics, regulation, and accountability. He also highlighted the "India AI mission" as a solution to become globally competitive.
Several initiatives are underway to strengthen AI research, infrastructure, and applications in India. These include the National Strategy for AI, developed by NITI Aayog, which focuses on leveraging AI for healthcare, agriculture, education, smart cities, and infrastructure, emphasizing inclusive and equitable growth. The National AI Portal (ai.gov.in) serves as a central hub for AI-related information and resources.
Furthermore, IIM Ahmedabad has introduced a new two-year blended MBA program focusing on Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. This program highlights the growing recognition of the importance of AI skills in the business world.
