Washington D.C. – In a recent White House press briefing, United States President Donald Trump hinted at a possible visit to India in the coming year, stating, "It could be, yes" when questioned about his travel plans. Trump also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "great friend," signaling potential progress in ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.
Speaking to reporters, Trump acknowledged the positive trajectory of discussions with PM Modi. "He (PM Modi) largely stopped buying from Russia. And he is a friend of mine, and we speak". He also described PM Modi as "a great man". Trump's remarks came after an announcement of a new deal aimed at lowering the prices of weight loss drugs in the United States.
Trump's potential visit to India also raises the possibility of attending the fifth summit of the Quad, which India is slated to host in 2025. The Quad, a coalition comprising Australia, Japan, India, and the United States, was revived during Trump's first term, aiming to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The relationship between Trump and Modi has been characterized by mutual respect and cooperation. Trump has often praised Modi's leadership, and the two leaders have maintained close communication on various issues. In the past, Trump has described PM Modi as a "very good friend" and stated that Modi has done a "fantastic job". He has also acknowledged PM Modi as a "very smart man".
However, reports also noted complexities in the relationship, particularly concerning trade imbalances and tariffs. Despite these challenges, both leaders have expressed optimism about strengthening ties between the two nations.
Earlier this year, Trump expressed confidence that ongoing trade discussions between the two nations would yield positive results. These discussions aim to finalize a significant trade deal, with both sides working through tough political decisions to reach a resolution.
Trump, along with his wife Melania and daughter Ivanka, previously visited Ahmedabad and New Delhi in February 2020. Should he visit India in 2026, it would mark another significant step in the relationship between the two countries.
