Attorney General R Venkataramani has apologized to the Supreme Court after facing criticism from Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai regarding the government's handling of the challenges to the Tribunal Reforms Act. The government has also indicated its willingness to consider adjustments to the Act.

The CJI had expressed strong disapproval of the Centre's request to refer the matter to a five-judge bench midway through the hearing, as well as a subsequent request to adjourn a scheduled hearing.

Venkataramani appeared before the bench via video conference and offered "a volley of apologies" for the inconvenience caused to the court. He committed to appearing in person on Monday to present his submissions on the validity of the Tribunal Reforms Act.

The Attorney General stated that he would explain the government's position and that the concerns raised by the petitioners challenging the validity of certain provisions could be taken into consideration. He also suggested that the Supreme Court could point out any issues with the Act that needed to be addressed.

The bench, consisting of the CJI and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, had previously informed Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati that they would accommodate the Attorney General's request to be absent on Friday and present his arguments on Monday. However, the Chief Justice clarified that no further requests for adjournment would be accepted.

One of the primary grievances of the petitioners, as articulated by senior advocate Arvind Datar, was that the short tenure of appointments, set at a uniform four years for members and chairpersons of various tribunals including the NCLT, NCLAT, CAT, CESTAT, APTEL, TDSAT, ITAT, and DRT, did not attract younger individuals. Datar argued that this resulted in only retired individuals applying for these posts, which are crucial for adjudicatory functions.
