Dhaka Rejects Rajnath's Yunus Criticism: Inaccurate and Unhelpful Remarks Strain Relations

Dhaka has responded to recent remarks made by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh regarding Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, characterizing them as "incorrect" and "not respectful of propriety and diplomatic nicety". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh conveyed this stance, emphasizing Bangladesh's continued commitment to a mutually beneficial relationship with India, built on principles of "sovereign equality, non-interference in each other's affairs, and mutual respect".

The remarks in question, reportedly made by Singh during an interview with Rahul Joshi, Group Editor-in-Chief at Network18, included a suggestion that Yunus "should be cautious with his statements". The interview was published by Firstpost on Friday. In response to media queries, Foreign Ministry spokesperson SM Mahbubul Alam stated that the Indian Defence Minister's comments had come to their attention and were deemed "incorrect and unhelpful and not respectful of propriety and diplomatic nicety".

While addressing the issue, Alam reaffirmed Bangladesh's dedication to maintaining a relationship with India that is based on mutual benefit, and respect for each other's sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs. Alam further stated that Bangladesh believes any differences in viewpoints should be addressed through respectful and constructive dialogue.

Rajnath Singh also stated during the interview that India does not want a rift with Bangladesh.

Tensions between India and Bangladesh have reportedly increased following political changes in Dhaka, including the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who sought refuge in India amidst anti-government protests. Singh's initial remarks were made in the context of Yunus's criticisms and the gifting of artwork that alluded to a "Greater Bangladesh," a concept that encompasses regions of India like Assam.

The situation is considered a critical juncture for South Asian geopolitics as India navigates the evolving political landscape in Bangladesh. Despite the disagreement over Singh's comments, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stressed the country's commitment to strong bilateral ties and continued dialogue with India.
