Tuchel's Update: Guehi's Injury Status and Potential Impact on Upcoming Serbia Match

England manager Thomas Tuchel has provided an update on Marc Guehi's injury situation ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Thursday. Guehi is currently nursing a painful bone bruise sustained while playing for Crystal Palace.

Tuchel confirmed that Guehi will miss the Serbia clash due to the injury. According to Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, Guehi suffered the injury against AZ Alkmaar and "can't even walk at the moment". Glasner revealed that Guehi had been using crutches for the two days leading up to Palace's match against Brighton.

Despite the painful nature of the injury, Tuchel offered a glimmer of hope for Guehi's potential involvement in the Three Lions' second match of the international break against Albania on Sunday. "Everybody is in training in the afternoon except for Marc Guehi,” Tuchel stated. "With Marc it is very painful but there is no structural damage so it is all about the pain".

Tuchel further explained that a significant improvement could occur rapidly. The England staff will assess Guehi daily. If Guehi is unable to train on Friday and Saturday, he will not travel with the team and will instead focus on rest and treatment.

Tuchel emphasized Guehi's importance to the squad, stating, "We want him to stay with us, want him to stay close. He is one of the leaders, he is an important member of the team". He also noted Guehi's role as a unifying presence within the team.

In light of Guehi's injury, Tuchel has called up Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah and Manchester City's James Trafford to the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. These call-ups also follow the withdrawals of Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope due to injury and concussion, respectively.

Chalobah made his senior England debut under Tuchel in June in a friendly against Senegal. Trafford, who has been playing second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma at Man City and hasn't played in the Premier League since August, is considered one of England's brightest young goalkeepers.

Looking ahead to the World Cup, Tuchel stated that he is not feeling pressure but is excited for the upcoming games. He also indicated that experimental team selections are a thing of the past as he focuses on solidifying his preferred starting eleven.
