FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has addressed the swirling speculation surrounding a potential return of Lionel Messi to the club, following the Argentine superstar's surprise visit to Camp Nou. In a recent interview, Laporta delivered a dose of reality to Barça fans, deeming a Messi comeback "unrealistic".

Messi's unexpected appearance at the Spotify Camp Nou ignited a frenzy of excitement among supporters, further fueled by the player's own social media post expressing his desire to "return someday". This sparked dreams of witnessing the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner don the Blaugrana colors once more. However, Laporta has firmly shut down these rumors, stating that, despite his deep affection and respect for Messi, a sporting reunion is not on the cards.

Laporta clarified his position in an interview with Catalunya Ràdio, dismissing the possibility of a 2026 comeback under the "Beckham Clause," which allows MLS players to join European clubs on short-term loans during the league's winter break. He stated that "speculating about his return as a player is not realistic". Despite the technical possibility of a short-term loan from Inter Miami, Barcelona has no plans to pursue it.

Messi's departure from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 remains a sensitive topic for many fans, who were disappointed by the club's financial situation that prevented them from retaining their greatest-ever player. While the relationship between Messi and Laporta is believed to be somewhat strained as a result of the exit, the president maintained that he would make the same decision again to protect the club's interests, saying "Barça is above everything".

While a return to playing for Barcelona may be off the table, Laporta did confirm that the club is planning a grand tribute to honor Messi's legendary career. The tribute is planned to take place at the renovated Camp Nou, which will have a capacity of 105,000 fans. While the "Beckham Clause" in his Inter Miami contract technically allows a short-term European loan, the Catalan club has no plans to pursue it.
