Valmiki Nagar, November 14, 2025 – The Valmiki Nagar assembly constituency in Bihar's West Champaran district witnessed a neck-and-neck battle between Dhirendra Pratap Singh of the Janata Dal (United) and Surendra Prasad of the Indian National Congress, as the results of the 2025 assembly elections were declared today. The intense competition kept supporters and political analysts on edge throughout the day.
Dhirendra Pratap Singh, also known as Rinku Singh, is the incumbent MLA from Valmiki Nagar . He has previously won the seat in 2015 as an independent candidate and in 2020 representing JD(U). In the 2020 elections, he secured 74,906 votes, defeating INC's Rajesh Singh by a margin of 21,585 votes. This time around, he faced a formidable challenge from Surendra Prasad, a seasoned politician with a long history in Bihar politics.
Surendra Prasad has been a Member of the Legislative Assembly for eight terms, representing the Belaganj constituency. He has also served as a Member of Parliament for the Jahanabad Lok Sabha constituency. His experience and strong support base made him a strong contender in Valmiki Nagar.
The Valmiki Nagar assembly constituency went to the polls on November 11, 2025, as part of the second phase of the Bihar Assembly Elections. This year, Bihar witnessed a voter turnout of 57.3%, slightly higher than in 2020.
The constituency has a diverse demographic profile. In 2024, Valmiki Nagar had 345,890 registered voters. Scheduled Castes account for approximately 14.7% of the population, Scheduled Tribes 18.93%, and Muslims about 9.7%. There are no urban voters in the constituency.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, JD(U)'s Sunil Kumar Kushwaha led by 26,829 votes over his RJD rival in the Valmiki Nagar Assembly segment.
Other candidates in the fray for the Valmiki Nagar seat included Azharuddin Ansari (IND), Rajesh Sharma (Lok Samaj Party), and Rameshwar Yadav (BSP).
The election results are being closely watched as they could have implications for the political landscape of Bihar. Valmiki Nagar is one of the six assembly segments under the Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha seat. In the 2019 general elections, Baidyanath Prasad Mahto of Janata Dal (United) won the seat. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sunil Kumar of Janata Dal (United) won the seat.
