Ajmer Sharif Dargah Caretaker Prays for Success of Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam's Film "HAQ"; Director Suparn Verma Shares Insights
Ajmer, India – The upcoming courtroom drama "HAQ," starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, has received blessings from an unexpected source. The custodian ("HAQ") of the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, a highly revered Sufi shrine, has offered prayers for the film's success. This gesture highlights the film's sensitive exploration of themes related to faith and justice, resonating with diverse communities.
"HAQ," directed by Suparn S. Varma, is inspired by the landmark Supreme Court judgment in the Shah Bano case. This 1985 ruling concerned the rights of a divorced Muslim woman to receive maintenance from her former husband. The film delves into complex legal and social issues surrounding women's rights, faith, and the interpretation of religious law.
Suparn Verma, in an exclusive interview, shared that "HAQ" is not a biopic but rather a reflection on a pivotal case that continues to be studied in law schools across India. He emphasized the importance of open dialogue and introspection when addressing sensitive topics. According to Varma, the film aims to inspire meaningful conversations about women's rights, faith, and justice without provoking controversy but with honesty and respect.
Emraan Hashmi plays Abbas, a sharp but morally conflicted lawyer caught between his professional duty and personal conscience. Yami Gautam embodies Shazia Bano, a determined woman battling for justice. Varma praised both actors for their dedication and willingness to approach the project with a student's mindset, eager to learn and experiment. He noted that Gautam, a new mother during filming, displayed remarkable intensity and commitment to her role. Hashmi, despite his extensive experience, treated every day on set as his first, contributing to a collaborative and creatively fulfilling environment.
Varma revealed the effort put into crafting the powerful monologues delivered by Hashmi and Gautam in the film's final act. These monologues, filmed in single takes with multiple cameras, encapsulate the core themes of "HAQ" and showcase the actors' dedication to their craft. The director emphasized that every word, gesture, pause, beat, and note mattered in those critical moments.
The film also features Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady in key roles. Vartika Singh, a model-turned-actress, makes her Bollywood debut with "HAQ".
"HAQ" is produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios. The film was shot over 32 days in and around Lucknow. Verma, visibly moved, shared that three years were spent researching and writing the film.
Varma expressed confidence that "HAQ" would resonate with audiences and spark conversations among open-minded individuals. He believes that the film's balanced and progressive approach will allow viewers to engage with the characters' journeys and reflect on the complexities of the issues presented.
