In a surprising turn of events, Anmol Gagan Maan, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA representing the Kharar Assembly constituency in Punjab, has resigned from her position and announced her departure from politics. The announcement, made on Saturday, July 19, 2025, has sent ripples through the political landscape of Punjab, prompting speculation and reactions from various political factions.
Maan conveyed her decision through a message on social media platform X, expressing that her heart was heavy but she had decided to leave politics. She requested the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly to accept her resignation and extended her best wishes to the AAP, hoping that the Punjab government would fulfill the expectations of the people.
AAP sources indicate that Maan had submitted her resignation to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan a few days prior to the public announcement. The party had reportedly attempted to persuade her to reconsider her decision. The abrupt announcement comes just days after Maan met with AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on July 15th. Following the meeting, Maan had praised Kejriwal's vision.
Anmol Gagan Maan, a singer-turned-politician, won her first election in 2022 from the Kharar Assembly constituency. She had defeated Ranjit Sing Gill, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA, by a margin of 37,885 votes. Maan, who hails from Mansa district, began her political career with AAP in July 2020. Before entering politics, she had established herself in the Punjabi music industry.
Maan briefly served as a minister in the Bhagwant Mann-led cabinet, holding portfolios such as Tourism and Culture, Investment Promotion, Labor, and Hospitality. However, she was dropped from the Cabinet in a reshuffle in September of last year.
In the past, Maan had been known for her assertive statements, including a claim made before the 2022 elections that an AAP government would decide on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops within five minutes. Opposition parties had subsequently used this statement to criticize AAP when the promise was not fulfilled. She had also accused administrative officers in Mohali of seeking bribes in her name in September 2024.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring took a dig at AAP, tweeting, "All is not well in @AAPPunjab." He referred to the suspension of Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh last month for alleged anti-party activities.
Maan's resignation and Gill's anticipated party switch are expected to reshape the political landscape of Kharar ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
