In a swift and coordinated operation, law enforcement agencies have apprehended five individuals in Kolkata in connection with the brazen murder of gangster Chandan Mishra in a Patna hospital. The arrests were made in the early hours of Saturday, July 19, 2025, following joint raids by the Bihar Police and the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) at a housing complex in New Town, a satellite township near Kolkata.
Chandan Mishra, a convicted murderer from the Buxar district in Bihar, was out on parole when he was fatally shot inside a private hospital ward in Patna on Thursday morning. The audacious attack, carried out by five armed men who stormed into the ICU, sent shockwaves through the state and raised serious questions about security arrangements at the hospital.
According to police reports, the arrested individuals were hiding in a flat within the New Town housing complex. Of the five, four are believed to have been directly involved in the shooting, while the role of the fifth suspect is still under investigation. Authorities are working to determine whether the fifth accused provided assistance to the others in evading authorities.
The swift apprehension of the suspects was aided by tracking their mobile phone tower locations after they fled Patna. The Bihar Police are now seeking transit remand to bring the accused before a local court in Patna, where they will face charges related to Mishra's murder.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mishra's murder was the result of a gang war. Police believe the mastermind behind the killing is Onkarnath Singh, also known as Sheru, a former associate and childhood friend of Mishra. Both Mishra and Sheru had a long criminal history and were once a formidable duo who terrorized several districts in Bihar. However, they later parted ways due to a dispute over the distribution of loot from jewellery showrooms in Patna and Ara. Investigators are also looking into the possibility that a land dispute in Buxar district may have been a motive for the murder.
The incident has prompted scrutiny of security protocols at Paras Hospital in Patna, where the shooting occurred. SP Patna (Central) Diksha had told PTI that a probe is underway as to how the criminals managed to reach the room where Mishra was admitted without any security check. CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed five unmasked armed men entering the ICU and opening fire at Mishra.
Five police officers have been suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the murder. The suspended personnel include a sub-inspector, two ASIs, and two constables.
Chandan Mishra had a long and violent criminal history, with over 20 criminal cases against him, including more than 12 murder cases. He had been arrested in Kolkata in 2014 and spent years in Bihar jails. At the time of his death, he was serving a life sentence in a murder case but was out on medical parole.
