India's progress across Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is being propelled forward by a dual strategy that combines robust safety nets with reforms aimed at fostering growth. NITI Aayog's Vice Chairman, Suman Bery, has highlighted this approach as the key to unlocking significant advancements across various sectors.
One of the most notable achievements of this strategy is the significant reduction in multidimensional poverty. Between 2013-14 and 2022-23, approximately 240 million people in India have been lifted out of multidimensional poverty. This accomplishment underscores the effectiveness of the government's initiatives in reaching vulnerable populations and providing them with opportunities for economic advancement.
In addition to poverty reduction, India is also making significant strides in the health sector. The nation is on track to achieve its health targets related to maternal, child, and infant mortality well before the 2030 deadline set for the SDGs. This progress can be attributed to improved healthcare infrastructure, increased access to essential medical services, and targeted interventions aimed at addressing the specific health needs of women and children.
The dual strategy emphasized by NITI Aayog focuses on protecting the most vulnerable through strong safety nets while simultaneously implementing reforms to create a more enabling environment for growth and ease of doing business. This has helped India to emerge as the fastest-growing major economy.
NITI Aayog plays a crucial role in India's development strategy by formulating long-term policies and acting as a bridge between the central and state governments. It promotes cooperative federalism and monitors the implementation of schemes to ensure that they align with national goals and international standards. NITI Aayog also serves as a think tank, providing knowledge and innovation to address national challenges.
The Indian government has also been focusing on efficient delivery of public services, formalizing the economy, expanding the tax base, and improving the ease of doing business. Direct benefit transfers and the widespread use of the JAM trinity (Jan Dhan, Aadhar, and Mobile) have helped to stop leakages and ensure that benefits reach the intended recipients.
To further boost farm output, the Cabinet has approved ₹24,000 crore for the PM Dhan Dhaanya Yojana, which will converge 36 programmes across 11 ministries. This scheme aims to raise yields and improve access to farm credit. NITI Aayog has also recommended easing investment rules for Chinese companies, which could further boost economic growth.
NITI Aayog has also been promoting the use of digital technologies for e-governance through the India Chain project, which aims to develop a nationwide blockchain network. This initiative is expected to enforce contracts more quickly, prevent fraudulent transactions, and help farmers through the efficient disbursement of subsidies.
Former NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar has co-authored a book emphasizing the need for India's leadership to mobilize talent and resources to design and implement a development strategy that addresses the challenges facing the country. The book highlights the importance of responding to the seismic changes reshaping the world and effectively exploiting opportunities to meet India's goals.
