In connection to the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra, which took place earlier this month inside a private hospital in Patna, eight people have been apprehended in Kolkata. The prime suspect, Tauseef Badshah, believed to be the leader of the hit squad, was among those arrested.
The arrests were made during a joint operation between the Bihar Police and the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF). Five individuals were initially arrested from a housing complex in New Town, followed by the detention of five more from a guest house in Anandapur. One of the suspects sustained a leg injury and was taken to a hospital.
Following Mishra's murder, the accused fled to Kolkata, where authorities tracked them using their mobile phone tower locations. The suspects were found hiding in a flat in a New Town housing complex. According to police, four of the five initially arrested were directly involved in the killing. Authorities are investigating whether the fifth individual was involved in the crime or simply aided the others in hiding.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a white SUV, believed to be carrying the primary suspects, traveling through Basanti Highway and passing through Anandapur, Kolkata Leather Complex, and Bhangar jurisdictions.
Chandan Mishra, who had been serving a life sentence in a murder case, was out on medical parole when he was killed. The incident occurred on July 17, 2025, when five armed men entered the ICU of Paras Hospital and opened fire on Mishra. Mishra had a history of criminal activity, with 24 cases against him, including 12 murders. Initial investigations suggest the murder was the result of a gang war, possibly linked to a rivalry with the Sheru gang. Concerns have been raised regarding hospital security and law enforcement in Bihar.
The arrested individuals will be produced before a local court, where Bihar Police will seek their transit remand. The police are also investigating how the perpetrators were able to reach Mishra's room without being stopped by security. Mishra had been arrested from Kolkata in 2014 and had been associated with interstate gold robber Santosh Singh.
