Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to 26, 2025. The visit aims to strengthen India's strategic and regional partnerships with both countries.
United Kingdom Visit (July 23-24)
At the invitation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, PM Modi will be in the UK on July 23 and 24. This marks his fourth visit to the country and his first since 2018. During the visit, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging discussions with PM Starmer on various aspects of the India-UK bilateral relations. They are also expected to discuss regional and global issues of importance. PM Modi is also expected to meet King Charles III.
A key highlight of the UK visit is the expected formal signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which has been under negotiation for three years. The deal is expected to eliminate or reduce tariffs on approximately 99% of Indian exports to the UK. It will also provide greater access to the Indian market for British products, including automobiles, whisky, and financial services. The FTA is expected to boost trade, investment, job creation, and growth in both economies, further deepening the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership. The agreement seeks to double bilateral trade to $120 billion by 2030. The two sides will also review the progress of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) with a focus on trade and economy, technology and innovation, defense and security, climate, health, education, and people-to-people ties.
Maldives Visit (July 25-26)
Following his UK visit, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives from July 25 to 26 for a state visit at the invitation of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He will be the Guest of Honour at the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Independence of Maldives on July 26, 2025. This marks the first visit by a Head of State or Government to the Maldives during President Muizzu's presidency. This is also Modi's first visit to the Maldives since assuming his third term as Prime Minister. His last bilateral visit to the Maldives was in June 2019.
PM Modi and President Muizzu will hold discussions on issues of mutual interest to strengthen the India-Maldives partnership. They will also review the progress of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership', adopted during President Muizzu's state visit to India in October 2024. The visit is particularly significant as both nations look to rebuild ties following a period of strained relations. The visit underscores India's commitment to its maritime neighbor, Maldives, and reflects the importance India attaches to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.
This visit carries profound significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives' independence and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India.
