India's Injury Woes Deepen Before 4th Test: Gill Out, Bumrah Plan Rethought Amidst England Challenge

Team India faces a double injury concern ahead of the crucial fourth Test against England, forcing a re-evaluation of their strategies, particularly concerning Jasprit Bumrah's workload management. The fourth Test is scheduled to commence on July 23 in Manchester.

Injury Concerns in the Pace Attack

India's pace bowling unit has been hit hard by injuries. Arshdeep Singh suffered a cut on his bowling hand during a practice session, requiring stitches and making him doubtful for the fourth Test. Akash Deep is also dealing with a groin niggle, casting a shadow over his participation. He reportedly felt discomfort during the Lord's Test. Akash Deep's recurring back problem flared up again, most probably during the Lord's Test. He found it difficult to complete his spells in the second innings of the third Test. Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj has been added to the squad as a cover for the injured bowlers. Kamboj recently toured England with India A and had a good outing, picking up five wickets in three innings and also slamming a half-century.

Bumrah's Workload Management in Focus

With the series on the line, these injuries have complicated India's plans for managing Jasprit Bumrah's workload. It was previously decided that Bumrah would not play all five Tests. According to a report, both Akash Deep and Bumrah won't be playing together in the remaining two games. It stated that if Bumrah is playing in Manchester, then Akash Deep will sit out. The duo will swap each other in the fifth Test at The Oval. However, the injury crisis might force India to alter their strategy and potentially include Bumrah in the fourth Test to bolster their bowling attack. Some reports suggest that the team management may have been considering giving Arshdeep Singh his Test debut, resting Jasprit Bumrah at Old Trafford. Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has suggested that Arshdeep Singh should step in if Jasprit Bumrah is rested.

Impact on Team Strategy

These injury concerns necessitate a strategic reshuffle for India. Losing two key pacers forces the team management to rethink their bowling combination and how to best utilize their remaining resources. Mohammed Siraj's role becomes even more vital, and the team must carefully manage his workload to ensure he remains effective. The absence of Arshdeep Singh, who was in contention for a debut, further limits the team's options.

Pant's Fitness

There are also concerns regarding Rishabh Pant's fitness, who injured his finger while keeping during the third Test. The team will have to see if he is capable of keeping wickets.

India trails 1-2 in the five-match series after a heartbreaking 22-run loss at Lord's. To win the series, India needs to win the last two Tests against England.
