Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced an allocation of ₹32.25 crore for the restoration of the Kabini dam, along with several irrigation and development projects in the region. The announcement was made on Sunday, July 20, 2025, during a traditional ceremony where the Chief Minister offered 'baagina' to the Kabini River.
The Kabini dam, constructed 51 years ago, irrigates over 1.13 lakh acres of agricultural land. Recognizing its importance to the farming community, the government has undertaken the strengthening and modernization of the dam. The ₹32.25 crore has been approved for the renovation work. The State Cabinet had approved the restoration project during a recent meeting.
Accompanying Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar highlighted the government's commitment to prioritizing dam repairs across the state. Shivakumar also mentioned the possibility of organizing a 'Kabini utsava' to promote tourism in the region. He stated that he would discuss the matter of ‘Kabini Utsava’ with the Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa and a decision will be taken after that. Shivakumar emphasized that the government's first priority is the safety of the dams.
The government is focusing on water efficiency and reservoir safety, with plans for drip irrigation and regional development. Proposals have been submitted for the modernization of the Taraka Reservoir canal and other irrigation systems around Kabini in H D Kote taluk.
Siddaramaiah also mentioned plans to develop a garden similar to the iconic Brindavan Gardens near the KRS dam, to enhance tourism. He reiterated the state government's commitment to the Mekedatu project, stating, "If the Centre gives its nod, we will build a parallel reservoir".
The water level in the Kabini reservoir on Sunday stood at 2,283.33 feet, just short of its maximum capacity of 2,284 feet, with an inflow of 15,000 cusecs. The offering of bagina was made to Goddess Kapila, seeking blessings for a good agricultural season. The Kabini dam plays a crucial role in irrigating around 1.13 lac hectares of farmland in the region.
The Chief Minister also addressed the issue of central taxes, stating that for every rupee Karnataka contributes to union taxes, it receives only 15 paise in return. He met with the 16th Finance Commission Chairman, Arvind Panagariya, to demand a larger allocation for the state from the central tax pool, as well as ₹1.15 lakh crore investment to strengthen Bengaluru's infrastructure for the five-year period beginning April 1, 2026.
