As of July 21, 2025, the Indian government has announced that 3.46 crore smart electricity meters have been installed across the country under various schemes. This information was shared by Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik in the Rajya Sabha.
Out of the total, 2.27 crore smart meters have been installed under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The RDSS has an outlay of Rs 3,03,758 crore, which includes a gross budgetary support of Rs 97,631 crore from the Government of India. Under RDSS, a total of 20.33 crore smart meters have been sanctioned till June 2025.
In addition to the above, approximately 73 lakh smart prepaid meters had been installed across the country as of November 2024 under the RDSS scheme. The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), launched in July 2021 with an outlay of Rs 3.3 lakh crore, aims to install around 25 crore smart prepaid meters by March 2025. As of November 2024, around 19.79 crore smart meters have been sanctioned and 72.97 lakh devices installed in various states.
These advanced metering solutions are designed to enhance operational efficiencies, reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses, and bolster the financial sustainability of India's power distribution companies.
In related developments, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal urged states to prioritize prepaid smart metering at government establishments, including government colonies. He said that this will streamline optimization of revenue from consumption of power and help reduce operational losses.
Smart meter installations are also increasing in the UK. ElectraLink reported a 15% rise in smart meter installations in March 2025 compared to the same month last year, with a total of 213,000 smart meters installed across the UK in March 2025, which is around 10% more than in February 2025. Over 600,000 smart meters have been installed so far in 2025. ElectraLink announced that a total of 25.15 million electricity smart meters have been installed across Britain since it began tracking the smart meter rollout in 2012. According to Ofgem, smart meters are present in 65% of homes and 61% of businesses, with around 90% of installed smart meters operating in smart mode.
ESB Networks is also upgrading 2.4 million electricity meters across Ireland as part of the National Climate Action Plan. Over 1 million smart meters have been installed to date.
