India's spirit scene is currently experiencing a fascinating transformation, marked by a growing appetite for luxury and unique drinking experiences. This has led to the emergence of new and exciting offerings, from ultra-premium Scotch whiskies to innovative gins and vodkas that showcase local ingredients and craftsmanship.

The Rise of Luxury Scotch

India's affluent class is increasingly driving the demand for high-end spirits, particularly Scotch whisky. The luxury Scotch whisky market in India has been growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16%. India has become the fifth-largest market for luxury Scotch whisky. Scotch whisky exports to India grew at a compound annual growth rate of 66% up to 2022. In 2023, the equivalent of 167 million bottles were exported to India, up 27% from 2019.

Amrut Distilleries celebrated its 75th anniversary by releasing Amrut Expedition, India's oldest and most expensive single malt, priced at approximately ₹10 lakh. Aged for 15 years, with eight years in sherry casks and seven in ex-bourbon casks, only 75 bottles of this limited-edition whisky are available in India. It features notes of chocolate, cracked black pepper, dried fruits, vanilla, and marmalade. Diageo India launched India Rare Spirits, an exclusive cask program offering connoisseurs the chance to own a bespoke expression of rare, aged malts.

Vodka's Versatile Appeal

Vodka continues to be a popular choice in India, prized for its versatility and neutral flavor profile. The Indian vodka market offers a range of options, from budget-friendly choices like Smirnoff and Skyy to premium brands like Grey Goose and Beluga. Indian brands like Smoke Vodka and Rahasya have also emerged, offering unique flavor profiles and craftsmanship. Smirnoff is known for its smoothness and versatility. Ochre Spirits added a touch of luxury to vodka with its Ochre Saffron Vodka, infused with real Kashmiri saffron and a hint of citrus.

Gin's Juniper-Heavy Renaissance

The Indian gin market is experiencing a surge in creativity, with new brands incorporating local botanicals and unique distillation methods.
