A recent remark by a Karnataka Congress MLA, R.V. Deshpande, has ignited a firestorm of criticism and debate, drawing attention to the intersection of politics, public service, and gender sensitivity. The incident occurred during a press interaction when a journalist inquired about the lack of a hospital in Joida taluk, a region within Uttara Kannada district. The journalist highlighted the difficulties faced by residents, particularly pregnant women, due to the absence of adequate medical facilities.

In response to the journalist's question, Deshpande, a former minister, made a comment that has been widely condemned as insensitive and inappropriate. According to reports, he told the journalist, "Don't worry, we'll get yours done elsewhere," while also winking. This remark was interpreted by many as a dismissive and flippant response to a serious issue concerning public health and welfare.

The comment immediately sparked outrage across various sectors, including the media, political circles, and women's rights organizations. Critics argued that Deshpande's words were not only disrespectful to the journalist but also trivialized the struggles of women in the region who lack access to essential healthcare services. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) have demanded a formal apology from Deshpande.

Media rights groups have also voiced their condemnation, emphasizing the importance of elected officials upholding dignity and leading by example. They stressed that such remarks undermine the journalistic profession and diminish the significance of women's concerns. Activists are calling for mandatory sensitivity training for public officials, highlighting the need to address sexism in professional environments and ensure that women are treated with respect and seriousness.

Deshpande's initial reaction following the backlash was to reportedly double down on his statement, further exacerbating the situation. He responded to the criticism by smiling and winking at those around him, reiterating, "When it's time for your delivery, we will get it done". The journalist, however, stood her ground, emphasizing the urgent need for a hospital in the region and urging Deshpande to prioritize its construction during his term. Deshpande simply responded with an "okay".

The incident has also brought renewed attention to the long-standing demand for a multi-specialty hospital in Uttara Kannada. Frustration over the lack of healthcare infrastructure in the region led to a social media campaign a couple of years ago called #NoHospitalNoVote, reflecting the depth of public concern and the determination to hold elected officials accountable.

As of now, Deshpande has not issued a public apology for his remarks. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of sensitivity and responsibility in public discourse, particularly when addressing issues that directly impact the well-being of citizens.
