Blues Shutout Blackhawks: Dominant 4-0 Victory Secures Momentum Heading into NHL Regular Season

The St. Louis Blues concluded their preseason with a dominant 4-0 shutout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on Saturday night. In their second meeting of the preseason, the Blues reversed the result from their previous encounter on September 27, when the Blackhawks rallied for a 4-2 win in St. Louis.

This time around, St. Louis asserted control, blanking a Blackhawks lineup that featured mostly AHL players. Chicago had recalled eight players from the Rockford IceHogs and signed three others to professional tryout contracts earlier in the day. The Blues, in contrast, iced a lineup with several projected starters, including Robert Thomas and Jake Neighbours.

The game remained scoreless through the first period, despite the Blackhawks starting strong with a 3-0 shots advantage. However, a penalty to Chicago's Brett Seney shifted the momentum, allowing the Blues to gain a foothold. Both goaltenders, Arvid Soderblom for Chicago and Joel Hofer for St. Louis, had solid starts to the game. St. Louis held a slight edge in shots on goal, 9-6, at the end of the first.

The Blues broke the deadlock in the second period when Aleksanteri Kaskimaki scored off an unusual shot that slipped past Soderblom, putting St. Louis ahead 1-0. The Blues then increased their lead to 2-0 when Milan Lucic scored, with Soderblom appearing to be screened on the play. Robert Thomas further extended the Blues' advantage before the end of the period, redirecting a shot to make it 3-0. The Blackhawks struggled offensively in the second, managing only two shots on goal, both from Lukas Reichel and Martin Misiak.

In the third period, the Blackhawks had an early power play opportunity after a roughing penalty on St. Louis’ Pius Suter, but they failed to capitalize. Otto Stenberg then scored on the power play for the Blues, increasing their lead to 4-0. That would be the final goal of the game.

While the Blackhawks had defeated the Blues 4-2 earlier in the preseason, this time, the Blues were dominant. The Blues also recently defeated the Ottawa Senators 7-1. The Blackhawks, on the other hand, were coming off a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

The Blues will start the regular season at home against the Minnesota Wild on October 9. The Blackhawks will begin their regular season on the road but their schedule is not yet known.
