Bhutan rattled by a moderate 3.1 magnitude earthquake, causing concern but hopefully minimal damage.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 struck Bhutan early Thursday morning, October 9, 2025. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the event.

The earthquake occurred at 04:29:37 IST (Indian Standard Time). It was a shallow earthquake, with a depth of 5 kilometers, increasing the potential for aftershocks. The epicenter was located at Latitude: 26.91 N, Longitude: 89.23 E, pinpointing the location within Bhutan.

The NCS shared details of the earthquake on X, a social media platform. They also encouraged users to download the BhooKamp App for further information.

Bhutan is located in the Himalayas, a region known for seismic activity, making it prone to earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. On September 8, 2025, two other earthquakes rattled Bhutan. The first, with a magnitude of 2.8, occurred at 12:49:37 IST at a depth of 10 km. The second, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake, was recorded at 11:15:51 IST, also at a depth of 10 km.

In addition to seismic threats, Bhutan faces risks associated with global warming, including Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and intensified seasonal winds.
