Emmitt Finnie scores twice, marking career milestones, as the Red Wings triumph over their opponent.

Detroit, MI – In a Sunday afternoon matinee at Little Caesars Arena, the Detroit Red Wings soared to a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, fueled by a memorable performance from rookie Emmitt Finnie. The 20-year-old Finnie, in his first full professional season, etched his name into Red Wings history by scoring his first two NHL goals.

The game remained scoreless after a first period dominated by Detroit, who held a 13-2 scoring chance advantage. However, the Red Wings broke the deadlock in the second period when captain Dylan Larkin found the back of the net with a blistering one-timer past Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner at 8:51.

The momentum continued as Finnie capitalized on a rebound at 11:54 of the second period, sending the Detroit crowd into a frenzy as he secured his first NHL goal. Noah Philp responded for Edmonton less than a minute later, deflecting a shot past Red Wings goalie John Gibson. Larkin then added another goal with 2:55 left in the second, restoring Detroit's two-goal lead.

Edmonton reduced the deficit in the third period when Leon Draisaitl scored off a cross-seam pass from Brett Kulak at 7:33. With the Oilers pressing to tie, Finnie sealed the victory for Detroit with an empty-net goal in the final minutes.

"It was an amazing feeling," Finnie said of his first career goals. "To do it in front of the home crowd makes it even more special. The guys were awesome, making sure I got the pucks.".

Dylan Larkin also had a standout performance, scoring two goals and two assists. Goaltender John Gibson made 16 saves on 18 shots, posting a .889 save percentage for the win. Skinner stopped 21 of 24 shots for the Oilers, recording a .875 save percentage.

Finnie, who wore the captain's C for the Kamloops Blazers last season, was drafted by the Red Wings in the seventh round (201st overall) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the team on March 26, 2024.

"Emmitt has come in and shown a lot of poise," said Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde. "He's a smart player, and he's earned this opportunity. To see him get rewarded with two goals is great for him and great for our team."

The Red Wings (5-1-0) have now won five straight games after starting the season with a 5-1 loss to Montreal. The Oilers (2-3-1) have lost three in a row.

Detroit begins a two-game road trip on Wednesday against the Buffalo Sabres. Edmonton concludes their five-game road swing on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.
