Patna, Bihar – Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha are expected to be retained as Deputy Chief Ministers in Bihar's new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. The decision was made during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party meeting in Patna. These two leaders will likely take oath on Thursday, November 20.
The NDA secured a decisive victory in the recent state assembly elections, obtaining 202 seats in the 243-member House. This marks the second time the NDA has crossed the 200-mark in the assembly polls, with the first instance being the 2010 polls where it won 206 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while its ally, the Janata Dal United (JDU), secured 85 seats.
Nitish Kumar, who is set to begin a record-extending 10th term as Chief Minister, will resign from his current post on Wednesday, November 19, initiating the formation of the new government. Following separate meetings by the BJP and JDU, a joint meeting of the NDA is scheduled for 3:30 PM in the Central Hall of the Assembly.
Samrat Choudhary, a prominent Other Backward Class (OBC) leader within the BJP, has had a long and varied political career. Born on November 16, 1968, he has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), a Minister in the Bihar government, and the Bihar State BJP President from March 2023 to July 2024. Before joining the BJP, Choudhary was a member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and even served as Agriculture Minister in the Rabri Devi government. In January 2024, he was appointed as the leader of BJP's legislative party in Bihar. After being appointed Deputy Chief Minister in January 2024, Choudhary also took on the significant roles of Finance Minister, Health Minister, and Minister of various other departments.
Vijay Kumar Sinha, the other likely Deputy Chief Minister, has been a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Lakhisarai constituency since 2010. Sinha served as the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from November 2020 to August 2022. Born on June 5, 1967, Sinha has also held the position of Minister of Labour Resources in the Bihar government. In the recent 2025 elections, Sinha secured a win in the Lakhisarai Assembly constituency against Amresh Kumar of Congress.
The continuation of Choudhary and Sinha as Deputy Chief Ministers signals stability and continuity within the NDA government in Bihar. As Bihar looks forward to the new government, Union Minister and BJP MP Arjun Ram Meghwal expressed confidence that Bihar will become a "Viksit Bihar".
