Mari Selvaraj Condemns Unfair Delay of Vijay's Jana Nayagan: A Filmmaking Perspective on Release Injustice.

The delay in the release of actor Vijay's final film, "Jana Nayagan," has sparked outrage, with filmmaker Mari Selvaraj condemning the situation as a "blatant injustice". Selvaraj's criticism is directed towards the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for its handling of the film's certification.

The Madras High Court initially put a stay on granting a UA certificate to "Jana Nayagan," further delaying the film's release. However, Justice PT Asha later directed the CBFC to grant clearance to the film after court hearings on January 6 and 7. Subsequently, the Madras High Court stayed the direction hours after the single judge cleared it.

Mari Selvaraj voiced his concerns on X, stating that the censor board's actions against "Jana Nayagan" represent a blatant injustice. He called upon fellow creators to raise their voices against what he perceives as a threat to democracy and creative freedom. "#JanaNayagan #CBFC," he wrote.

The controversy surrounding "Jana Nayagan" has drawn attention to the role and practices of the CBFC, with some figures in the Indian film industry questioning the relevance of film censorship in the modern era. Director Ram Gopal Varma also criticized the CBFC, calling the organization "outdated".

Fans of Vijay have expressed their disappointment and have also shown their support and anticipation for the film’s release. They are promising a "stronger comeback" and a "super hit".

Adding to the complexity, "Jana Nayagan" was originally scheduled to be released on January 9, the same day as Prabhas's "The Raja Saab". Due to the delay in certification, "The Raja Saab" reportedly gained 250 extra screens in Tamil Nadu. "The Raja Saab" has been released and has already made ₹14.39 crore net in India by 3 pm on its opening day. Some fans predict the film can earn ₹500 crore in India and over ₹1000 crore worldwide.

The events surrounding "Jana Nayagan" have ignited a debate about censorship, creative freedom, and the power dynamics between filmmakers and regulatory bodies in India. The delay has not only impacted the release of Vijay's final film but has also raised broader questions about the film certification process and its potential impact on artistic expression.
