Munich, Germany – Bayern Munich delivered a resounding statement of intent in their first Bundesliga match after the winter break, dismantling VfL Wolfsburg 8-1 at the Allianz Arena on Sunday. The victory, fueled by a record-breaking pair of own goals from Wolfsburg and a brace from Michael Olise, extended Bayern's lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to a commanding 11 points.
The game started with a bang as Luis Diaz's cutback in the 5th minute was deflected into the net by Wolfsburg's Kilian Fischer, marking Wolfsburg's third consecutive league game with an own goal – a new Bundesliga record. However, Wolfsburg responded well, with Dzenan Pejcinovic finishing off a slick passing move to equalize in the 15th minute.
Bayern quickly regained control, with Diaz heading in a cross from Olise in the 30th minute to restore the lead. Olise, who proved to be a constant threat, then scored himself with a well-placed curling shot before halftime. The second half saw no let-up from the home side, as Wolfsburg's misery continued when Moritz Jenz turned another Olise cutback into his own net in the 53rd minute.
Despite hitting the post through Olise in the 64th minute, Bayern continued to surge forward. Substitute Raphael Guerreiro added a fifth goal, followed swiftly by Harry Kane, the Bundesliga's leading scorer, who extended the lead further. Olise capped off a memorable performance on his 50th Bundesliga appearance by grabbing his second goal of the evening in the 76th minute, assisted by Diaz. Leon Goretzka completed the rout with a flicked goal from a tight angle in the 88th minute, sealing Bayern's biggest-ever win against Wolfsburg.
Bayern's dominance over Wolfsburg at home remains unmatched, with 27 wins and two draws in 29 Bundesliga matches. Their last league defeat to Wolfsburg was in January 2015. The victory showcased Bayern's attacking prowess and their relentless pursuit of another Bundesliga title. Bayern have dropped just four points in 16 Bundesliga games this season, the best record in Europe's top-five leagues.
