Recent reports indicate that a postgraduate student from Haryana has been apprehended for allegedly having links with Pakistani intelligence operatives. The 25-year-old, identified as Devender Singh from Kaithal district, was initially arrested on separate charges related to uploading photos with weapons on social media. However, further investigation revealed his alleged connections to Pakistani intelligence.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Astha Modi, the investigation revealed that Singh, a political science student at a college in Punjab, had traveled to Pakistan in November of last year on a pilgrimage. During this visit, he purportedly established contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives and maintained communication with them after returning to India. SP Modi stated that his phone has been seized and sent for forensic analysis.
Singh has reportedly admitted to sending photos of the Patiala cantonment, taken from outside, to his contacts. Authorities are currently conducting a financial audit and scrutinizing his bank account to ascertain the extent of his involvement and whether any financial transactions occurred with the intelligence operatives. An additional FIR has been registered against him in light of these findings.
Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur has stated that each case, whether in Panipat, Kaithal, or elsewhere, has unique facts. He affirmed that the investigation is ongoing and all links found during the probe will be followed up with further action.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another arrest in Panipat, where a 24-year-old, Nauman Ilahi, was apprehended for allegedly providing sensitive information to individuals in Pakistan. Ilahi, a native of Uttar Pradesh, worked as a security guard in Panipat. He was allegedly in contact with a Pakistan-based ISI handler. His arrest occurred amid heightened alert in Haryana, following a recent military confrontation with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack.
These cases are part of a series of recent arrests in the region involving individuals suspected of espionage and having links to Pakistani intelligence. On May 3, Amritsar police arrested two men for allegedly sharing sensitive details of Army cantonments and airbases, and on May 11, Malerkotla police arrested two individuals for allegedly aiding a Pakistani official in Delhi. Additionally, a tailor working inside a military station in Bathinda was arrested on May 13 on suspicion of spying.
The recent arrests highlight the ongoing concerns regarding espionage and the potential for sensitive information being leaked to foreign entities. Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating these cases to uncover the full extent of these networks and prevent further breaches of national security.
