Following heightened tensions with Pakistan after the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, India is embarking on a major diplomatic outreach initiative named "Operation Sindoor." Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is set to lead an all-party delegation on a multi-nation tour, commencing May 24th, to convey India's firm stance against terrorism to various countries, including Colombia, Brazil, and the United States.
The government has selected Tharoor, along with six other Members of Parliament (MPs) from across the political spectrum, to spearhead this crucial global mission. This initiative aims to present a united front to the international community, emphasizing India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism in the wake of escalating tensions with Pakistan.
Tharoor's delegation is scheduled to visit Georgetown (Guyana), Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and finally, the United States. He stated that the briefing for his delegation is scheduled for Friday, May 23rd. He explained the delegation is departing later because the U.S. Congress will not be in session until June 2nd due to the Memorial Day weekend. Other delegations are expected to depart earlier to different regions.
The diplomatic outreach is a direct response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which was followed by India's retaliatory Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps across the border. Pakistan's subsequent military offensive further heightened the need for India to spotlight Islamabad's role in cross-border terrorism and garner international support.
Other prominent leaders who will head delegations include BJP leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Baijayant Panda; Sanjay Kumar Jha of JD(U); Kanimozhi Karunanidhi from DMK; Supriya Sule of NCP-Sharad Pawar; and Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde. These delegations will visit countries including the US, UK, South Africa, UAE, Qatar, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, among others. Ravi Shankar Prasad's delegation is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria, while Supriya Sule's team will travel to Oman, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt. Sanjay Jha's delegation is likely to visit Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Shrikant Shinde may lead a delegation to the UAE and several African countries, and Kanimozhi is likely to head a delegation to Russia and Spain.
The selection of Shashi Tharoor to lead this significant delegation is particularly noteworthy, considering his recent praise for the government's handling of Operation Sindoor. His inclusion, along with other opposition leaders, underscores the national consensus on the issue of terrorism. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has stated that the mission aims to project India's resolute approach to combating terrorism in all its forms.
