Tajon Buchanan's stellar performance propelled Canada to a dominant 6-0 victory over Honduras in their opening match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at BC Place on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Buchanan's goal in the 48th minute extended Canada's lead to 3-0, effectively putting the game beyond Honduras's reach.

The rout began with Niko Sigur, a local Vancouver product, scoring his first goal for the senior national team in the 27th minute. Tani Oluwaseyi then doubled the lead in the first-half injury time, giving Canada a comfortable 2-0 cushion going into the break. Buchanan's goal shortly after the restart further solidified Canada's dominance.

Buchanan wasn't done, as he added his second goal of the match in the 65th minute, making it 4-0. Substitute Promise David joined the party in the 75th minute, increasing the lead to 5-0. Nathan Saliba then completed the scoring in the 90th minute, sealing an emphatic 6-0 victory for Canada.

Dayne St. Clair, the Canadian goalkeeper, recorded a clean sheet, denying all three on-target shots from Honduras. Canada's head coach, Jesse Marsch, was absent due to a suspension and was replaced by Mauro Biello on the touchline.

Canada is set to continue their Gold Cup campaign against Curaçao on June 21 in Houston and will conclude Group B play against El Salvador on June 24. The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the knockout stage, with the final scheduled to be held in Houston on July 6.

The win against Honduras marks a strong start for Canada in their quest for a competitive mindset as they approach the 2026 World Cup.
