Anurag Kashyap's latest film, "Bandar" (also known as "Monkey in a Cage"), is generating significant buzz as it premieres at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film, starring Bobby Deol, Sanya Malhotra, Saba Azad, and Sapna Pabbi, delves into the complex and sensitive subject of the #MeToo movement in India and its aftermath within the digital age.
Kashyap, known for his gritty and realistic filmmaking style in movies like "Gangs of Wasseypur," "Black Friday," and "Ugly," returns to the international festival circuit with "Bandar," promising another raw and thought-provoking narrative. The film is produced by Nikhil Dwivedi, who also backed "Veere Di Wedding" and "CTRL".
"Bandar" explores the story of Samar, played by Bobby Deol, an aging television star whose fame is fading. Samar finds happiness in a new relationship with Khushi (Saba Azad), but his life takes a dark turn when his ex-girlfriend, Gayatri (Sapna Pabbi), attempts to re-enter his life. Unable to communicate with her, Samar cuts off all contact, leading Gayatri to accuse him of rape. This accusation results in Samar's arrest and his entanglement within a corrupt legal system.
The film aims to explore the nuances of the #MeToo movement, avoiding simplistic portrayals of victims and predators. Kashyap emphasizes the film's focus on the "cracks in the system, the silences in the courtroom, and the people who disappear inside them". He was inspired by a true story and newspaper articles about the misuse of laws, where women filed multiple cases with the help of lawyers and police.
Bobby Deol's portrayal of Samar is said to be a significant departure from his previous roles. Kashyap praised Deol's commitment to the character, stating that Deol "totally put his whole vulnerable self out there" and that it was the first time Deol felt he was playing a person rather than a hero or villain. Deol himself connected with the character, drawing on his own experiences of career ups and downs.
Saba Azad's role as Khushi, the girlfriend of the accused man, presented unique challenges, while Sapna Pabbi's background was incorporated into her character, highlighting Kashyap's emphasis on authenticity. The film also features a strong ensemble cast including Sanya Malhotra, Indrajith Sukumaran and Joju George.
Kashyap and writer Sudip Sharma visited jails across the country during their research, uncovering the harsh realities of the Indian prison system. One case that particularly impacted Kashyap was that of a man declared innocent after 32 years in prison, but whose case was never even heard.
"Bandar" is not intended to be a judgment on innocence or guilt but rather a commentary on the flaws and injustices within the legal system. The film seeks to hold a mirror to society, reflecting the unheard stories and injustices hidden behind the laws.
