US official Gor highlights strong US-India relations after a productive meeting with Prime Minister Modi.

New Delhi: US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor affirmed the United States' strong valuation of its relationship with India following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Gor, a close associate of US President Donald Trump, is currently on a six-day visit to New Delhi.

"Just finished an incredible meeting with PM Modi, where we discussed bilateral issues, including defence, trade and technology," Gor stated. He also highlighted the importance of critical minerals in discussions.

Prime Minister Modi reciprocated the sentiment, expressing confidence that Gor's tenure would further strengthen the "India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership". Modi conveyed this message in a post on X following the meeting.

The US Ambassador-designate emphasized President Trump's high regard for PM Modi. "President Donald Trump considers Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'a great personal friend'," Gor said. He also referenced a recent phone call between the two leaders on October 9, describing it as "incredible" and anticipating continued communication in the coming weeks and months.

The visit occurs as India and the US seek to reinforce strategic and trade connections. Both nations are exploring avenues to finalize a trade agreement and enhance collaboration in technology and defense.

Sergio Gor also met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. "Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance," Jaishankar posted on X after their meeting. Gor described the series of meetings, including one with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, as "great".

During his visit, Gor presented PM Modi with a photograph from a previous meeting between Modi and Trump at the White House on February 13. Trump had inscribed on the photo, "Mr PM, you are great".

While Gor's appointment as the US Ambassador to India has been confirmed by the US Senate, he has not yet officially assumed the role. He will return to the US before coming back to India to take up his post. Notably, Gor will also serve as the 'Special Envoy for South and Central Asia', expanding the scope of the US diplomatic mission in India. This signifies a broader mandate and increased authority for the US in the region, extending beyond typical bilateral relations.

Sergio Gor's visit and his remarks underscore the continued importance the US places on its relationship with India, even amidst existing trade tensions. His meetings with key Indian figures signal a commitment to strengthening ties across various sectors and addressing challenges in the bilateral relationship.
