Ahmedabad, India, is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant return of the event to the country after it was held in Delhi in 2010. The Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow officially ratified India's bid, signaling a new chapter for the Games and for sports in India.
The 2030 edition is particularly special as it marks the centenary of the Commonwealth Games, which were first held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The event in Ahmedabad is being dubbed "The Games for the Next Century," with a focus on ensuring the Games remain relevant and impactful for years to come.
Commonwealth Sport has confirmed that the Ahmedabad Games will feature between 15 and 17 sports. Weightlifting, Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball and Boxing are already confirmed as core sports. A final decision on the remaining sports is expected next year. Sports under consideration include archery, badminton, 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon and para triathlon, and wrestling. Additionally, the hosts have the option to propose up to two new or traditional sports, potentially opening the door for the inclusion of indigenous disciplines like kabaddi and yogasana.
The confirmation of Ahmedabad as the host city has been met with enthusiasm. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, noted that this marks "the start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport". He highlighted India's scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, and sporting passion as key factors. India's Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, hailed it as a "momentous occasion" and a "major milestone in India's quest for becoming a sporting powerhouse".
India has a rich history with the Commonwealth Games, having participated in all but four editions since 1934. The country has hosted the Games once before, in 2010 in Delhi, which was its most successful campaign to date, with 38 gold medals among a total of 101 medals. As of November 2025, India ranks fourth in the all-time Commonwealth Games medal table, with 203 gold, 190 silver, and 171 bronze medals.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as hosts. The Glasgow Games will be a scaled-down event with a more limited sports program. Ahmedabad is expected to deliver a full-fledged sports program.
Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) is the organization responsible for preparing and sending Australian teams to the Commonwealth Games. It is a member-based organization that receives no direct government funding. Australia has a strong Commonwealth Games history, having hosted the event five times and consistently topping the medal tally.
