Kamal Haasan urges a principled reevaluation of film certification following Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' release postponement.

Amidst the delay of Vijay's highly anticipated film, 'Jana Nayagan,' actor and politician Kamal Haasan has called for a "principled relook" at the film certification process in India, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. His statement arrives at a crucial time for the Tamil film industry, as 'Jana Nayagan' faces obstacles in securing its release.

Haasan, a member of the Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, issued a statement on January 10, 2026, advocating for reforms within the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). He specifically called for defined timelines for certification, transparent evaluation procedures, and written justifications for any suggested cuts or edits. Haasan argues that the current lack of transparency stifles artistic freedom, disrupts economic activity, and erodes public trust.

The controversy surrounding 'Jana Nayagan' escalated when the Madras High Court issued an interim stay, directing the CBFC to grant the necessary certificate. The film's release, initially planned for the Pongal festival, has been stalled. Adding to the debate, Sivakarthikeyan-starrer 'Parasakthi' was recently cleared by the CBFC but with 25 cuts.

Haasan stressed that the issue transcends the fate of a single film, reflecting how the nation values art and artists within its constitutional democracy. He highlighted that cinema is a collaborative effort involving writers, technicians, performers, exhibitors, and small businesses, all of whom depend on a fair and timely process.

Quoting the Constitution of India, Haasan asserted the guarantee of freedom of expression, emphasizing that it should be guided by reason and never diminished by opacity. He urged the film fraternity to unite and engage in a "meaningful, constructive dialogue" with government institutions to protect artistic freedom.

Haasan believes that reforming the film certification process will safeguard creative freedom, uphold constitutional values, and strengthen India's democratic institutions by affirming trust in its artists and its people. He also noted that cinema lovers in Tamil Nadu and across India deserve openness and respect.

The call for a reevaluation of the film certification process has resonated within the industry, with many film personalities voicing their support. Haasan's intervention seeks to address the systemic issues affecting the film industry and ensure a more equitable and transparent environment for artistic expression.
