Prashant Tamang, the winner of Indian Idol Season 3, has died at the age of 42. The singer and actor passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, due to a heart attack in Delhi. He was taken to a hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi, where he was pronounced dead.
Tamang, who was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, on January 4, 1983, rose to national fame after winning Indian Idol in 2007. Before his rise to stardom, he was a constable in the Kolkata Police, where he sang for the police orchestra. His victory on Indian Idol was met with widespread celebration, particularly among Nepali-speaking communities across borders.
Besides his successful singing career, Tamang also ventured into acting, playing leading roles in Nepali films like "Gorkha Paltan" and "Pardeshi". He also appeared in the Indian web series "Paatal Lok 2".
According to reports, Tamang was set to appear in the upcoming film "Battle of Galwan," alongside Salman Khan. Although his specific role in the film was not disclosed, he had shared behind-the-scenes photos from the set, expressing his excitement about the project. "Battle of Galwan" is slated for release on April 17 and will now be his final on-screen appearance.
News of Tamang's death has shocked the entertainment industry, with many fellow musicians and actors expressing their grief and paying tribute on social media. Amit Paul, the runner-up of Indian Idol Season 3 and a close friend of Tamang, shared the news on social media, expressing his disbelief and sorrow. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her condolences, acknowledging Tamang's connection to Darjeeling and the Kolkata Police.
Prashant Tamang is survived by his wife, Geeta Thapa (also known as Martha Alley), and their daughter, Ariah Tamang. His legacy extends beyond his musical achievements, as he represented Nepali-speaking communities worldwide through his songs and music.
