From Convent Walls to Courtrooms: Sister Lucy's Inspiring Journey to Law Practice at Sixty.

Sister Lucy Kalapura, at the age of 60, has enrolled as a lawyer with the Kerala High Court Bar Council, marking a significant turn in her ongoing public journey.

Sister Lucy's path has been marked by both faith and defiance. In 2019, she was expelled from the Fransiscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) after participating in protests against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who was accused of rape. The FCC cited her lifestyle, alleging it violated church rules, as the reason for her expulsion, claiming she failed to provide sufficient explanation.

Undeterred, Sister Lucy has now embraced the legal profession, joining Sree Narayana Law College in Ernakulam's Poothotta in November. A photo of her in her college uniform – a shirt, trousers, and waistcoat, with her hair uncovered – circulated on social media, symbolizing her break from traditional norms.

Her decision to study law is rooted in a desire to fight for justice, particularly for nuns suffering within convents and to be a voice for the voiceless. She aims to provide courage to those seeking justice.

Prior to her legal pursuits, Sister Lucy was a mathematics teacher, retiring from service in 2021. She had joined the convent at the age of 17. Currently, she resides in a hostel, having been denied entry to the convent. Despite the challenges, she has received a warm welcome and support from her teachers and classmates.
