The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘cyclone alert’ for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, effective today, October 20, 2025, due to a developing cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to intensify significantly from October 21, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions to the region over the next few days.
The IMD forecasts heavy rain (7–11 cm) at isolated places in the Nicobar Islands, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) across parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from October 21 to 23. Unstable weather conditions are likely to persist on October 24 and 25, although with slightly reduced intensity.
Squally weather is also predicted, with surface wind speeds reaching 35–45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph, likely over the Andaman Sea from October 22 to 23. The IMD has warned that sea conditions will remain rough over the next five days and has advised fishermen not to venture into the waters along or off the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar coasts until October 24.
In response to the alert, the Andaman and Nicobar administration has issued warnings to boat operators, island residents, and tourists, advising extreme caution. Officials have urged organizers of recreational activities to ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, particularly in coastal and marine areas. Tourists and the general public are advised against venturing into the sea and are requested to follow all safety guidelines issued by the local administration.
The brewing weather system is expected to intensify beginning October 21, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions over the next few days. Intense thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning are expected in the region on October 21, 22, and 23. Adverse sea conditions, including high winds and rough waters expected from October 22 to 23, pose a threat to safety. Fishermen are urged to avoid the sea, while boat owners and tourists should exercise increased caution and adhere to safety directives from the local administration.
The IMD has also predicted a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, triggering rainfall in the range of 64.5mm to 111.5mm likely over parts of Tamil Nadu.
