The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a warning to Indian citizens against falling prey to unscrupulous agents who promise lucrative opportunities abroad through illegal means. This advisory comes in the wake of a significant number of deportations of Indian nationals from the United States.
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, 2,417 Indian nationals have been deported or repatriated from the U.S. since January 2025. Jaiswal reiterated India's support for legal migration pathways while firmly opposing illegal migration. He emphasized that the Indian government is actively working with state governments to crack down on agents promoting illegal migration. The MEA also issues regular advisories to citizens, raising awareness about the risks associated with illegal migration.
The MEA's warning highlights the vulnerability of individuals who are lured abroad with false promises. These agents often exploit the desire for better economic prospects, leading unsuspecting individuals into precarious situations. The consequences can be severe, including deportation, financial loss, and emotional distress.
The recent deportation of Harjit Kaur, a 73-year-old Sikh woman, has drawn attention to the plight of long-term residents facing deportation. Kaur, who had been living in the U.S. for over three decades, was deported to India after being detained by immigration authorities in California. Her lawyer, Deepak Ahluwalia, alleged that she was mistreated at the detention center, being denied a bed and forced to sleep on the floor despite having undergone knee surgeries. Ahluwalia also stated that Kaur was not even allowed to say goodbye to her family or collect her belongings.
The Sikh Coalition has called Kaur's deportation "inhumane," stating that it exemplifies the "systemic cruelty inflicted on immigrant families". Congressman John Garamendi has also criticized the deportation, denouncing the crackdown on undocumented immigrants.
The MEA has stated that it is ready to take back individuals who do not possess legal status in another country, provided that their Indian nationality is confirmed through due process. The ministry has also said it promotes legal migration from India and wants to curb illegal migration, as it undermines efforts to promote legal migration.
The MEA's advisory serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the credentials and promises of agents offering overseas opportunities. It is crucial for individuals to conduct thorough research, seek guidance from trusted sources, and ensure that they are following legal channels for migration. By staying informed and vigilant, Indian citizens can protect themselves from exploitation and avoid the harsh consequences of illegal migration.
