Jannik Sinner secured his place in the ATP Finals semi-finals with a straight-sets victory over Alexander Zverev on Wednesday. The defending champion thrilled his home crowd in Turin, Italy, with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Sinner has now extended his winning streak on indoor hard courts to 28 matches.
Sinner's victory, combined with Felix Auger-Aliassime's earlier win over Ben Shelton, means that Sinner progresses from the Bjorn Borg Group with a match to spare. Zverev will now face Auger-Aliassime for a chance to join Sinner in the semi-finals. Shelton, meanwhile, has been eliminated from contention.
Sinner expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, "I felt like I was serving very well in the important moments. I tried to play the best tennis possible when it mattered and fortunately today it went my way". He acknowledged the difficulty of returning serves in his group, which includes Zverev and Shelton.
The match was closely contested, particularly in the early stages. Zverev had opportunities to break Sinner's serve in the first game, but Sinner managed to hold with the help of four aces. Sinner eventually broke Zverev in the final game of the first set to take the lead. In the second set, Sinner fought off break points in the early games before breaking Zverev to take a 4-2 lead. He then served out the match to secure his place in the semi-finals. Sinner is also still in contention to finish the year as world No. 1, but he needs to win the tournament and hope that Carlos Alcaraz doesn't win another match.
Earlier on Wednesday, Felix Auger-Aliassime kept his hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive with a comeback victory over Ben Shelton. The Canadian rallied from a set down to beat the American 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5. Auger-Aliassime, the eighth seed, secured his first win at this year's ATP Finals.
Shelton dominated the first set, but Auger-Aliassime fought back to win the second set tiebreaker. In the third set, Auger-Aliassime broke Shelton in the final game to seal the victory. Auger-Aliassime said that Shelton was playing better than him at the start, but he found ways to put returns in the court as the match went on. He added, "Once we engaged in the rallies, I felt like I could win more".
Auger-Aliassime's win evened his record at 1-1 in the tournament. He had lost his opening match to Sinner. Shelton fell to 0-2 and will not advance out of the group stage. Auger-Aliassime will face Zverev in his final group match, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.
